In The Dying World; Part I, Lauren Tsai reimagines Hollywood Forever Cemetery as grounds for a living dreamscape where time and narrative bends according to emotional logic. The project centers on Astrid, a character who inhabits a makeshift house positioned behind the Cathedral Mausoleum, its presence uncanny among stone and palm. Within this house, Astrid’s bedroom becomes a portal into a world that is equal parts fictional set and autobiographical echo. Drawings, paintings, and looping stop-motion a“imations evoke a multi-sensory environment, while whimsically crafted puppets anchor Astrid’s world in physicality. The installation resists storytelling, privileging sensation, repetition, and ritual over a fixed resolution. In this way, Tsai reframes the cemetery as a space not merely of remembrance but of ongoingness, where memory is reanimated and emotion is given form.
